Canon 5D Mark III | 50mm | F1.4 | 1/200 | ISO640
I saw this shot on a bike ride through one of the surrounding villages where I live. There are numerous fence gates around the area but none of which have the background separation such as this one. Not too far but not too close to the subject. I wanted to capture the texture in the galvanized steel in sharp detail, to make the main point of focus spread across the whole image.
I could have gone closer to the subject, but I knew doing so would blow the background out enough to make the roadway behind become too blurry to distinguish what is is. I knew when composing the shot that it was likely I would chose to process this as a black and white image, simply because there wasn’t much colour going on in the image, it was quite flat. But I think the black and white really makes it stand out quite well.
The thing I love about the 50mm 1.4, is that wide open, it gives an incredibly unique hot glow in the center of the image. Which while is very soft, still gives this amazing look in my opinion. Post vignette added to enhance this look a little.
